- What languages get spoken in your house, and who speaks which to whom?
All of my family speaks Mandarin Chinese to each other, including me. I answer them in Chinese. My brother is the only other family member who speaks English besides myself, and we speak English specifically to each other.
- Describe a normal weeknight dinner at your house.
Rice, tomato and egg, fried chicken chunks, stir-fried green beans, and banana milk.
- Where does your family food shop, and how far do they drive to do it?
My family shops at either Costco or 88 Market. They drive around 20-30 minutes, sometimes more.
- What happens in your house on a Sunday?
We watch football and lounge, eat some favorite dishes at night like lamb skewers.
- What sport, instrument or activity did you end up doing — and who decided?
Horseback riding. I picked it because I’ve always loved horses.
- What do your parents expect of you, said out loud or not?
They expect someone who’s an all rounder an everything, somebody that they can brag about.
- What do you get asked about being Asian American that you are tired of being asked?
“Do you only eat rice?”
- What city or neighbourhood did your family first live in when they arrived?
Redwood City, California. We now live in North Andover, Massachusetts.
- Is there a story about your family that gets retold?
My brother being the first one to come to America for education.
- Who in your family would you most want interviewed properly, and why?
My brother, because he’s seen things in America that I haven’t.
- What do you want someone to know about your family in a hundred years?
My parents worked extremely hard to get to where they are.
